Attempt to malign our democracy and institutions, says Ashwini Vaishnaw on 'Pegasus Project'

Speaking on the 'Pegasus Project', IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Lok Sabha said, "A highly sensational story was published by a web portal last night. Many over-the-top allegations made around this story. The press reports appeared a day before the Monsoon session of Parliament. This can't be a coincidence."

He added, "In the past, similar claims were made regarding use of Pegasus on WhatsApp. Those reports had no factual basis and were denied by all parties. Press reports of 18 July 2021 also appear to be an attempt to malign Indian democracy and its well-established institutions."

RECAP: TMC MPs cycle to Parliament to protest fuel price hike

Several Trinamool Congress MPs cycled to Parliament on Monday, the first day of the Monsoon session, to protest against fuel price hike. The party MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will also hold a dharna at Vijay Chowk.

The All India Trinamool Congress has given multiple notices under various Rules in both house of Parliament on the opening day of the Monsoon session, the party said.

According to News18, the issues on which notices have been given include price hike of diesel, petrol, LPG and other commodities, demand to repeal farm laws, decline in economic growth, restoration of MPLAD funds and the alleged weakening of the federal structure by the government.

Modi in RS accuses Opposition of having 'anti-woman' mindset 

Amid uproar by Opposition leaders in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acussed them of having an "anti-woman mindset", claiming they do not want women ministers to be introduced to the House.

"It's a matter of pride that several women, people belonging to the SC and ST community have taken oath as Ministers. Several new Ministers are children of farmers and also belong to OBC communities. But it seems some people cannot digest that more women, SC, ST and OBC community members are becoming Ministers. They also have an anti-woman mindset since they do not want women ministers to be introduced to the House, said Modi.

The prime minister also said such a "negative mindset" has never been seen in the Parliament.

PM introduces new ministers in Rajya Sabha


Despite uproar by the Opposition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the new Union ministers in Rajya Sabha.

"It should make everyone proud that several women, several people belonging to the SC and ST community have taken oath as ministers. Several new ministers are children of farmers and also belong to OBC communities. It seems some people cannot digest that more women, SC, ST and OBC community members are becoming ministers," Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the Upper House.

"It's a matter of pride that people from rural India, who come from ordinary families have taken oath as Ministers. But some people don’t want ministers to be introduced. They also have an anti-woman mindset since they do not want women ministers to be introduced to the House," he said.

However, the Opposition reached the well of the Rajya Sabha with placards and raising slogans, Chairman Venkaiah Naidu requested Opposition to take their respective seats but to no avail and finally Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2pm

The prime minister said he has requested all floor leaders for a discussion on pandemic on Tuesday evening as he wanted to give them detailed information on the pandemic. I am meeting all state CMs for (discussing) the COVID-19 situation so wish to do the same with floor leaders, he said. We want discussion inside Parliament as well as outside it with floor leaders on Covid pandemic, the prime minister added.

"This Parliament Session should be fruitful. The government is ready to give all the answers the country's people want. I urge all MPs, political parties to ask the sharpest and most difficult questions but maintain peace and calm and give an opportunity to the governmnet to answer the questions so that the truth reaches people and democracy is strengthened, people's trust increases and the pace of development increases" Modi said.

Speaking at the start of the Monsoon session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said 40 crore people have become Baahubali ( have received the COVID-19 vaccine). "I hope that you all have got one dose of vaccine. I request you all to follow Covid-19 protocols. More than 40 crore people have become 'bahubalis' by taking vaccine," he said.

"The pandemic has gripped the entire world. So we want  meaningful discussions in the Parliament over it, the prime minister further said. He also appealed everyone to maintain COVID-19 protocol.

Deeply concerned over media being sidelined, says Press Club of India

The Press Club of India said it is "deeply concerned about the manner in which the media is being sidelined", saying this has never happened before in the history of independent India. "Monsoon session of Parliament begins today, and out of about 400 journalists, only 60 are allowed. Restrictions continue despite the honourable Lok Sabha speaker’s public announcement that all permanent passes will be renewed. We still hope with respect to the chair that the promise will be fulfilled in letter and spirit," it said on Twitter.

"The media is an intergal part of parliamentary democracy," it said, adding that it has written to leaders of all political parties in both the Houses. "We appeal to all concerned including the honorable chairman of the Rajya Sabha and speaker of the Lok Sabha to save parliamentry democracy and allow all media as usual," it added.

CPI MP moves adjournment motion over snooping row

 
CPI leader Binoy Viswam has moved as adjournment motion under rule 267  over the Pegasus snoopgate row in the Rajya Sabha, reports News18. An international media consortium on Sunday reported that over 300 verified mobile phone numbers, including of two serving ministers, over 40 journalists, three Opposition leaders and one sitting judge besides scores of business persons and activists could have been targeted for hacking between 2018 and 2019 through an Israeli spyware sold only to government agencies. The government has however said that “no unauthorised interception" has taken place and that the report is not only “bereft of facts” but also “founded in pre-conceived conclusions”.
